Song Lists: Manic Street Preachers

The final in the St David’s Day set and who else but the mighty Manics. Following a disappointing eighties where the only credible act was Scritti Politti followed by the efforts of Mike Peters and The Alarm, the Manics put us well and truly on the map and better still have maintained longevity (along with the Phonics). As bastions of Welsh music it is somewhat appropriate that a lot of their work is in red! There are however plenty of exceptions to the rule and like most lists some that are difficult to pigeon hole such as Hugheskova which skip through many colours, but I have a go here. As with U2 last year, I’ve had to abort some of the songs from The Holy Bible due to my teaching schedule and also because with that record you have to be in a certain frame of mind to play it and I’m seldom there these days. Apologies to the Manics and fans if your fave is absent.
*please note I don’t list all the songs, just enough to give an overview.

FUTUROLOGY (chorus red)

ORANGE

MOTORCYCLE EMPTINESS (‘all we want from you’ part alternates between orange and white)

SYMM (first part is an unusual blend of red and grey)

GLASNOST

BETWEEN THE CLOCK AND THE BED

LIGHT BLUE

ROYAL CORRESPONDENT

BRIGHT BLUE

JOURNAL FOR PLAGUE LOVER

MID BLUE

FREEDOM OF SPEECH WON’T FEED MY CHILDREN

DARK BLUE

SLASH N’ BURN (middle may be a different colour but I’d need another listen)

DIRTY DARK BLUE

DIE IN THE SUMMERTIME (chorus dark blue/orange)

DARK BLUE/YELLOW

WORKING CLASS HERO

THERE BY THE GRACE OF GOD (most of the their output is easy to classify but not so in this case, Grace is unusual and also atmospheric; intro in dark blue/yellow, chorus in dark blue/yellow then yellow briefly for the latter line in the chorus)

DREAMING A CITY (HUGHESKOVA)(this is one of the most difficult post-Richey tracks to list as it traverses dirty dark blue, dark blue/orange and even pink)

DARK BLUE/ORANGE

FOUND THAT SOUL

MISS EUROPA DISCO DANCER

EMPTY SOULS

A SONG FOR DEPARTURE

(I MISS THE) TOKYO SKYLINE (a song of two halves with the intro and verse in orange and the chorus and middle in the dark blue/orange couplet, it could just as easily been listed under orange)

I LIVE TO FALL ASLEEP

PALE PINK

LITTLE BABY NOTHING

LIFE BECOMING A LANDSLIDE

THE EVERLASTING

THE DESCENT (chorus alternates between purple and grey)

POSTCARDS FROM A YOUNG MAN

KEVIN CARTER

TO REPEL GHOSTS

FRAGMENTS

THIS JOKE SPORT SEVERED

FACING PAGE: TOP LEFT (also dark green in James acoustic toward the end)

BUILDER OF ROUTINES

GREY BROWN

INTRAVENOUS AGNOSTIC (the best I can guess for the bridge is dirty dark blue, while the chorus is in red)

BROWN

ROSES IN THE HOSPITAL

BLACK

YOURSELF (this is indeed a difficult one to place, combining black with deep brown and even dark green)

ARCHIVES OF PAIN (as with much of their Richey-era material, this is extremely tricky to navigate because of several key changes, this is how it scans to me – bridge is crimson or violet guitar solo maroon or rose)

4ST 7LB (bridge mint green, latter part of song in light green/pale pink

MAUSOLEUM (bridge is a multitude of blues: blue, then mid blue, then bright blue, the next part is a dirty dark blue verse before the song returns to its black – ideally I’d really need to play this again)
