‘I’m coming down coming down like a monkey’ crooned Phil Collins mysteriously on Genesis mid-eighties tune Tonight Tonight Tonight. Next to oriental iconography the monkey seemed a popular staple for songs of the eighties and beyond and now it seems the two finally meet at the beginning of what will be my fifth year in China.
So far I’ve had the year of the Dragon (quite apt for a red wearing Welshman – albeit with English roots) the year of the Snake in Shenzhen, also apt in my home was in the expat enclave Shekou – ‘snake mouth’ in Chinese, the year of the horse in Taipei and the ram in Guangzhou so it’s anyone’s guess what the monkey will bring, hopefully a return to travel which has been lacking the past two years’ due to replenishment of stock i.e. computers, clothes and other things that need updating, changing gradually making this digital nomad ever lighter in the bags department.
The real conundrum comes two years’ from now when it will be the year of the dog; according to reports it is very bad luck to be in China in your own lunar year. Meanwhile Tonight tonight tonight the Chinese celebrate; expect red, tangerines and possibly fireworks (or not – in Guangzhou at least).
