Song Lists: Pink Floyd

For those new to the lists.. since childhood I have experienced what I later found to be called Synesthesia, a mixing or blurring of the senses. This is particularly common in arts people. In my case it manifests itself as hearing music as colour. When I say colour I speak of base colour, so in the event a song shifts key and hence colour mid-way through I’ll list it under its base or main colour for easier reference. There are of course those that are difficult to pigeon-hole; Interstellar Overdrive, A Saucerful of Secrets and Several Species.. for a start. Let’s go back to Overdrive for example, there are in my findings so far many couplets eg Dark Blue/Orange or Dark Blue/Yellow caused by two instruments that are playing in different colours or keys. Now, what if all instruments are playing a different colour? You get a menagerie of sound. It’s music but with no definable centre and that’s basically why music born of the avant-garde, especially the underground scene from which the Floyd originate, is extremely difficult to discuss here. Back to the recent past and a lot of The Endless River is in white, so I’ve only listed the more interesting ones. The river is a good analogy for Pink Floyd because that’s how I see them – a listening source that darts in and out of view across the years. Anyway, I hope this list – which itself has taken many twist and turns to come to fruition – is both interesting and thought provoking. *please note I don’t list all the songs just enough to give an overview so sorry if your ‘fave’ is missing. The PDF version is nicer but sadly WordPress does not yet support a direct conversion (even from word).

WHITE
CHILDHOOD’S END (intro organ in orange)
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE
PIGS (THREE DIFFERENT ONES) (middle pig grunt part alternates between deep rose and white)
SHEEP (intro, because of certain notes in the synth line, is in a slightly lighter deep green than the middle section ie ‘the lord is my shepherd’ which is in dark green, ‘you better watch out, there may be dogs about’ and ‘what a surprise..’ parts in dark blue and finally the parts around 4mins and from 8.07 in orange – in other words it’s something like this…

green/white/dark blue/white/dark blue/orange/white/dark blue/dark green/white/dark blue/orange and I can be even more specific in that there are two brief shifts to yellow once during the intro at 1.27 – 1.34 and another at 5.04 – 5.16 but you should get the idea)

ROUND AND AROUND
SORROW (a shift to yellow occurs just before the 4 mins mark then red at 4.17 and onto orange until 5.15 when the track returns to white)
KEEP TALKING
IT’S WHAT WE DO (Shine On You Crazy Diamond in white!)
NIGHT LIGHT (middle part in grey)
TALKIN’ HAWKIN’ (latter part in green)
SURFACING (alternates between white and pink)

CREAM
SEE EMILY PLAY (chorus apricot)
GREEN IS THE COLOUR
FEARLESS (this one is somewhere between cream and pale rose)
WISH YOU WERE HERE (David’s opening guitar intro in red)
PIGS ON THE WING 1 & 2
MOTHER (bridge parts in pink)
THE SHOW MUST GO ON
WAITING FOR THE WORMS
YOUR POSSIBLE PASTS
LEARNING TO FLY (middle part in pink)
ON THE TURNING AWAY

MINT GREEN
A SPANISH PIECE
OBSCURED BY CLOUDS
WHEN YOU’RE IN
IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?

YELLOW
IBIZA BAR
IN THE FLESH (intro – before David’s guitar kicks off in pink – then dark blue followed in rapid succession by pale rose/pink then at 35secs by dark green and finally into the mainframe of yellow)

APRICOT
ASTRONOMY DOMINE (as with my note about Interstellar Overdrive above this is very difficult to navigate – the main colour as best as I can ascertain is apricot but it shifts key a lot, the other definable colour is grey, and dark green in the last 20-30 secs)
THE GOLD IT’S IN THE…

ORANGE
A PILLOW OF WINDS
TIME (chorus in yellow for the ‘home again’ part at approx 5.45 it reverts to the red of Breathe)

ORANGE/GREY
THINGS LEFT UNSAID (first minute in light blue, after which it drifts in and out of the orange/grey couplet and light blue, one of their most interesting in terms of colour)

RED (varying shades)
ONE OF THESE DAYS (as with Money below I initially had this down as something else entirely – a mustard yellow! However, while doing the Joni Mitchell list I happened to play her ‘Empty, Try Another’ track and realised it was exactly the same key – at least to my ears. It’s great to know these lists are still making me question myself and are every bit as fascinating to produce! This and Money are an odd slant on red, a very warm hue a world away from say Us and Them below but red like many other colours covers a lot of ground, I think it makes sense now. Had I played the Joni track a day later this list would have looked very different! There is by the way a correlation between yellow and red so it wasn’t too far out of sorts)
BREATHE
MONEY (One of those very rare instances where I’ve had to reprogram my brain after years of thinking of this as a tan shade of brown. I then altered it to a new couplet of mustard yellow/tan when I realised its similarities to One of These Days and finally on hearing the aforementioned Mitchell track to red. I should add that its coda has an element of another there especially in David’s solo – perhaps this is what threw me for so many years but the fortuitous part is that these lists are still throwing me curveballs in that like science I find the solution to something while looking in the opposite direction)
US AND THEM
BRAIN DAMAGE
GOODBYE BLUE SKY (‘Did you see/hear..’ parts in green)
COMFORTABLY NUMB
TWO SUNS IN THE SUNSET
POLES APART (part in orange, orchestral part in two-tone green)
MAROONED

LIGHT BLUE/GREY
THE LOST ART OF CONVERSATION (some orange in the coda)

MID BLUE (varying shades)

DARK BLUE
THE NILE SONG (there are key changes – notably to a grey – but rather fittingly it’s a murky track)

DARK BLUE/ORANGE
ON NOODLE STREET

DARK BLUE/YELLOW

LIGHT GREEN

OFF LIGHT GREEN
THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY (not like most light greens but more of an off set hue)

GREEN
SET THE CONTROLS FOR THE HEART OF THE SUN (hard to gauge an exact green with the limited palette I have available but the above is getting there. Some of the synth sounds as the track develops are more akin to brighter greens like turquoise)

TWO TONE GREEN
HEY YOU (the part beginning with ‘it was only a fantasy’ at 2.55 in white)
TERMINAL FROST (part in grey and middle section in green)

GREEN/RED
LOUDER THAN WORDS (intro and chorus in the dark blue/orang couplet, main part of the song alternates between green and red, similar to U2’s In God’s Country, outro in light blue as par Things Left Unsaid)

DARK GREEN
*green and pink run together through the colour spectrum e.g. mint green/pale pink, light green/crazy pink and dark green/crimson – so differentiating them can be very difficult!

CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE, EUGENE
ANY COLOUR YOU LIKE
ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL PT 1, 2 & 3 (another long-held notion was that the first part was a crimson or maroon colour and again there are nuances that hint at it but I finally succumb that I might be wrong hence its listing here, this in turn is making me question the whole dark green/crimson ideology, perhaps all the songs I’ve listed under maroon are in fact dark green, would need a musician to help me iron out the notation side of things to know for sure)
RUN LIKE HELL
ONE OF THE FEW
YET ANOTHER MOVIE (At 5.55 it switches to grey blue then to white for Round and Around)

PALE PINK (varying shades)
CIRRUS MINOR (organ part in yellow)
CYMBALINE (chorus is a higher octave with shades of the darker pink)

PINK
THE THIN ICE
ONE OF MY TURNS (first half, later part olive/grey)
OUTSIDE THE WALL
ANISINA (this weaves in and out of the paler pink and the above hue. One thing is for certain.. this mild excursion is a million miles away from Interstellar Overdrive!)

ROSE
FEARLESS (see note under cream)

MAROON

VIOLET
THE POST WAR DREAM
SOUTHAMPTON DOCK
THE FINAL CUT (chorus is a slightly deeper hue)
SIGNS OF LIFE (yellow at 1.50 then green, then white around 2.35)

PURPLE
DOGS (though there are a few shifts, eg. to a warm red on one minute, followed by grey most of this is in the purple-grey vein)

GREY (varying shades)
ECHOES (another difficult piece to analyse and one which the term ‘epic’ is thoroughly definitive! Let’s begin.. the intro has tinges of dark blue/green, the verses are in light blue/grey after which follows the jam session piece at 7mins until approx 11mins in dark grey, this is swallowed by the atmospheric howling wind part which is more or less a middle grey – not sure what the high-pitched Moomin thingies are supposed to be, maybe a hang over from Several Species – this part morphs into the next on 15mins; a red refrain of One of These Days with some lovely guitar work from David around 18mins, then at 18.50 it switches back toward dark blue/green and finally to the light blue/grey of the verses, phew!)
ABSOLUTELY CURTAINS (as with Echoes above some of the keyboard notes are prolonged giving it another colour)
DON’T LEAVE ME NOW (latter part in green)
ONE SLIP
A NEW MACHINE 1 & 2
HIGH HOPES

BROWN

BLACK
MAIN THEME (MORE)
SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND
*the second one (parts 6-9) is mostly black too, save for the shift to white for its concluding part.
