Song Lists: Little River Band

Wellington.. New Zealand.. sometime in the late seventies.. you’ve perused pictures of the pink and white terraces in the museum and pondered why they no longer exist, you’ve seen Kramer vs Kramer and been bored and/or depressed out of your nine year old mind, you may also have wondered why the hell a small Toblerone costs $8 in the import store and why only Australia gets Shredded Wheat. This leaves only one thing.. The Sunday Drive. The new wave chic of Duran Duran and Icehouse (well.. Flowers) lay around the corner but in 1979 shabby looking dudes with beards are in (Supertramp, Dr. Hook, ELO). One of these is the country tinged rock of Little River Band from across the ditch (although to be fair, I think only Graeham Goble had said beard). The Sunday Drive could take a myriad of roads.. up to the Kapiti coast, across to Eastbourne, around Cape Palliser or to Porirua and Johnsonville (there is something definitely LRB about Johnsonville, it is full of bearded guys called Bunny in check shirts and shark tooth necklaces). You could be assured of one thing on The Sunday Drive.. the soundtrack would often be Casey Kasem’s American top 40 and at that time, LRB were one of the biggest bands from Australasia, often hitting the top 10 Stateside. So enough reminiscing about the seventies, let’s say happy anniversary to Greaham Goble whose birthday is on the tenth and greetings to anyone called Bunny that may be lurking in the backwaters of NZ’s finest non-descript towns (possibly with beard and shark tooth necklace).

PS I don’t think many LRB fans will be interested in synesthesia or what colour the songs are but who cares…

WHITE

CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT
THE NIGHT OWLS
LOVE WILL SURVIVE (middle part in green)
NO MORE TEARS
NO REINS ON ME
THIN ICE (chorus in orange)
TWO EMOTIONS
THERE’S NOT ANOTHER YOU

MINT GREEN

HOME ON MONDAY (chorus crimson, middle part in yellow)
LIGHT OF DAY (first half in the green, latter half in deep red)
MISTRESS OF MINE

YELLOW

THE DRIFTER
WITCHERY (as with a lot of songs in yellow there is a tinge of red in it, same with Lady below)
LADY (guitar intro in red)
ONE FOR THE ROAD (intro and chorus in teal green)
COOL CHANGE
TAKE IT EASY ON ME (the piano intro begins in light green and alternates between that and yellow until the first chorus and mainframe of the song kicks in. This is a quite common colour shift not just with LRB but in other artists’ work. A similar shift occurs in both We Two and Soul Searching)
GUIDING LIGHT
WE TWO
LOVE IS A BRIDGE
FACE IN THE CROWD
SOUL SEARCHING

ORANGE

MAN ON YOUR MIND (verses in white)
JUST SAY THAT YOU LOVE ME (middle part in white)
EVERY TIME I TURN AROUND

RED (varying shades)

STATUE OF LIBERTY
EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE (middle part in dark green)
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY (acappella parts in white)
REMINISCING (intro in beige grey or warm grey shifting up an octave to grey blue before the main song comes through, the chorus is also an odd shift between maroon and the deep red of the verses – a little like they’d do with Ballerina later down the proverbial track)
FALLING (verses in white)
THROUGH HER EYES
COUNT ME IN (chorus in white, middle part in grey)
I DREAM ALONE

LIGHT BLUE

HELP IS ON ITS WAY (chorus in pink middle part – apricot, then pale pink leading back into the blue)

MID BLUE

PAPER PARADISE

DARK BLUE/YELLOW

THE RUMOUR (obviously born from Home on Monday, in that the intro and middle section is green, the bridge is deep pink with the chorus and latter part in yellow)

DARK BLUE

TIME & ETERNITY (chord sequence of this is really difficult to describe but shifts between several blues and may at some parts include the dark blue/orange couplet, however dark blue is the common denominator)

LIGHT GREEN

SANITY’S SIDE
MIDDLE MAN
ORBIT ZERO (middle in white)

DARK GREEN

FALL FROM PARADISE
BLIND EYES
IT’S COLD OUT TONIGHT

PINK

EMMA (also some grey in its chord dna – as you can see below this is clearly a combination they like)
LONESOME LOSER (verses in grey)
PIECE OF THE DREAM (chorus in violet penultimate chorus in yellow)
HOW MANY NIGHTS? (verse alternates between pink and grey while the chorus is grey)

ROSE

TAKE ME HOME

CRIMSON

BALLERINA (this is unusual in that the intro and verses are in deep red, don’t often get this combination in song)

MAROON

IT’S NOT A WONDER
IT’S JUST A MATTER OF TIME (verse alternates between maroon and dark green, bridge and chorus in dark green)
INSIDE STORY (chorus brown)
THE SHUT OUT (chorus in purple)

*I should also mention that at times it’s very difficult to differentiate between green and pink right through to dark green/maroon etc.

VIOLET

PURPLE

SEINE CITY
THE OTHER GUY

GREY

THE NET

BROWN/OLIVE

SON OF A FAMOUS MAN (bridge mint green, chorus in yellow, Graeham’s middle part in grey)

BLACK

IT’S A LONG WAY THERE
DON’T BLAME ME
