Song Lists: U2

*This is not the list I wanted to present but computer problems combined with the start of the new academic semester have prevented me from repeat listens of some of the material. None the less there is plenty for U2 fanatics to analyse.

Since childhood I have experienced what I later found to be called Synesthesia, a mixing or blurring of the senses. This is particularly common in arts people. In my case it manifests itself as hearing music as colour. Here is a rudimentary list of ‘U2’ songs. When I say colour I speak of base colour, so in the event a song shifts key and hence colour mid-way through I’ll list it under its base or main colour for easier reference. There are of course those that are difficult to pigeon hole such as the first few records. Boy in particular has a lot of its work in a similar key (namely the blue/grey that colours most of it) or in half tones/chord sequence that are difficult to pinpoint (An Cat Dubh) especially with my limited palette. It seems if anything Brian Eno gave them colour! While there are always similarities to Simple Minds the bands differ greatly in their most diverse era in terms of colour. The Minds utilised their youth for exotic colour combinations (Sons & Fascination) but for U2 it would occur much later with No Line On The Horizon. Also worth noting is there is very little change in their first three albums, the few that stray from shades of grey or blue are Brick.. (white/green), A Celebration – which in terms of sound it is, being an exuberant orange – and October’s title song in its green. Incredibly there was no red until A Sort of Homecoming on The Unforgettable Fire and yes.. The Troubles did cause me trouble (of the tonal kind). Anyway, I hope this is both interesting and thought provoking and happy St Patrick’s Day!
