Song Lists: The Blue Nile

As we approach Scotland’s national day next month I thought it apt to put up a trilogy (here’s hoping I can finish the Simple Minds list in time) of Scotland’s finest with the Cocteau Twins rounding off the three. This is of course no mean feat from a country that boasts The Big Dish, Love and Money, Del Amitri, Aztec Camera and Deacon Blue among its musical coffers. In the case of THE BLUE NILE, this October marks the 25th anniversary of what for many is their crowning glory – HATS.  It doesn’t seem 25 years to me and musically it still holds. For those of you that might be new to the lists, these attempt to chart the colour of an artist’s songs (I’ve also included some of Paul’s solo work and the song Midnight Without You) via the intriguing guise of Synesthesia. Surprisingly the majority of their material is red and there isn’t one grey track that I know of, unusual for a Scots band. As always this is not as nice as my original doc/pdf file but I hope it’s both interesting and thought provoking.

WHITE/CREAM

A WALK ACROSS THE ROOFTOPS
TINSELTOWN IN THE RAIN
*both Tinseltown and Rooftops are tricky to gauge as they’re so subtle and light. For years I’ve always considered the former to be yellow but on closer inspection here I think it does just fall into the warmest and palest of reds. There are a lot of songs by other artists that are similar, where I’ve had to re-think where they lie in terms of colour.
