Song Lists: INXS

October; release date of many of their albums; 1980’s debut, 82’s wonderful Shabooh Shoobah and the one that got me hooked – 85’s Listen Like Thieves. These lists are certainly proving to be a revelation; songs I’ve thought of for years to be one colour turn out to be something very different on my scrutinizing them. Particularly This Time, Need You Tonight, Strange Desire, Men and Women and Make Your Peace. Anyway, I hope this is both interesting and thought provoking.

WHITE/CREAM

FACE THE CHANGE
SPY OF LOVE (middle part dirty pink)
HEAVEN SENT
GOD’S TOP TEN (some red in the intro)

MINT GREEN

LEARN TO SMILE
JOHNSON’S AEROPLANE
NEVER TEAR US APART
MYSTIFY
THE STAIRS (a small part of the intro and bridge are in violet)

YELLOW

CALLING ALL NATIONS
NOT ENOUGH TIME
BACK ON LINE

APRICOT

HERE COMES (middle part white, ‘I found some questions..’ part and final minute in red)
BLACK AND WHITE (chorus in red)
LISTEN LIKE THIEVES (chorus in red, middle in burgundy *it’s a little perplexing to think of this part as a darker colour as it’s so light and I’d previously had it down as a green much like The One Thing below, however, I think the tonal attributes of the guitars take it into the rosier hues of burgundy. Likewise the opening refrain, Andrew’s keyboard part coming out of the middle and the guitars during the verses steer it into the apricot/orange sphere which is very much in keeping with the album cover image, though it isn’t far off being a warm fiery red. As we go on you’ll see they are masters of space and nuance!)

ORANGE

JUST KEEP WALKING (It might only be 2.42 but it’s complex! Middle part and chorus in white, Tim’s guitar part at around the minute mark and at 1.50 in dark blue, bridge alternates between white and the orange – so it really is a coloured tug of war between verse and chorus)
THE ONE THING (chorus green)
NEW SENSATION
DISAPPEAR
TASTE IT
PLEASE (YOU GOT THAT..)
CHERRY BABY

RED (varying shades)

UNDERNEATH THE COLOURS
FOLLOW
GOLDEN PLAYPEN
JAN’S SONG
DON’T CHANGE
ORIGINAL SIN
SHINE LIKE IT DOES
THIS TIME (I always thought of this as white, but I was a little misguided. That said it’s a strange half breed with white chords in the intro and chorus offsetting the red which make it difficult to place. Or in other words the accent is different, its true colour is hidden beneath the chord sequence. For example, some of the intro notes are very different colours but combined they appear white. Overall, the more I listened in, I realised the red was more prominent than first thought, particularly in Andrew’s keyboards. The song is actually quite skeletal with only Jon and Gary holding the pieces together. This is even more evident with Need You Tonight later down the track. It continues to be a fascinating learning curve doing these lists and none more so than with this little gem).
TINY DAGGERS
SUICIDE BLONDE
WISHING WELL
FREEDOM DEEP
JUST A MAN

LIGHT BLUE

BEAUTIFUL GIRL

MID BLUE

KISS THE DIRT
AFTERGLOW

DARK BLUE

OLD WORLD, NEW WORLD
ALL THE VOICES
WHAT YOU NEED
KICK
ALL AROUND

DARK BLUE/ORANGE

SAME DIRECTION (‘and we all just need the same thing..’ chorus in orange)
MAKE YOUR PEACE

LIGHT GREEN

NEVER LET YOU GO

LIGHT TEAL GREEN

BIG GO GO (picked purely for it’s unique colour combo in the INXS catalogue, intro in prussian green below, chorus in orange)
TIGHT (this is another oddity and shows their dexterity in the art of sound! The track appears light but this is due to the sum of its parts being fragmented eg the funky guitar riff and Andrew’s electric piano and keyboard parts held over Jon’s back beat, so it’s slightly darker than those in the mint green range, the other key component of the song is burgundy)

PRUSSIAN GREEN

THE GIFT

DARK GREEN

SOUL MISTAKE (chorus in white)
THE SWING
THREE SISTERS (part in white)
FAITH IN EACH OTHER

PALE PINK (varying shades)

JUST TO LEARN AGAIN (intro in purple)
ON MY WAY
PRETTY VEGAS

PINK

MOVE ON

GREY PINK

TO LOOK AT YOU (bridge and middle part in burgundy, chorus grey/pink)
NEED YOU TONIGHT (intro – guitar part: pink, bass: grey For the verses some instruments play in grey while the keyboard motif is in pink As with ‘This Time’ earlier, it’s a very skeletal piece on this occasion held together by Jon and the funky guitar running through it. The rest are fragments dropped into place on top of that guiding rhythm bed)
STRANGE DESIRE (much as I love this one, it’s one of the hardest to describe and a somewhat kaleidoscopic affair; again, more so than I’d previously thought. Loosely speaking, the intro is burgundy/grey/purple, caused by the shifting bassline. Again, there are similarities to This Time because these notes are combined and gone in a second or so, the overriding colour would be purple which is dominant during the verses. Equally complex is its chorus and outro in pink/light green I tried to decipher which it was but I think both are present courtesy of a nuance. Generally though I’ve always looked on it as a feel good track so the balance tips in favour of the pink/green couplet which makes up a good half of the track)

BURGUNDY

BURN FOR YOU (intro pink then yellow, then into burgundy for the verses, chorus in yellow)
WILD LIFE
DEEPEST RED
CUT YOUR ROSES DOWN (chorus grey)

CRIMSON

STAY YOUNG
MEDIATE

VIOLET

PURPLE

ON A BUS
DEVIL INSIDE
I’M ONLY LOOKING
ELEGENTLY WASTED
DON’T LOSE YOUR HEAD

GREY (varying shades)

LATELY
WHO PAYS THE PRICE?
QUESTIONS
MEN AND WOMEN (again there is a feint hint of pink at the front of this but most lies in the grey)

BROWN

BARBARIAN (intro/outro in light blue)
COMMUNICATION

BLACK

MELTING IN THE SUN (chorus in mint green)
