Song Lists: The Police

To coincide with Sting’s birthday (yesterday actually) I’ve decided to put up this newly completed list. It is however the birthday of Zenyatta Mondatta; still resplendent at 34!
I can still remember sitting in the family car listening to When the World is Running Down.. on the radio. It sounded like nothing else. Andy’s guitar on that piece especially enhancing the pink and crimson hues of the sky at dusk. And a few years later there was Tea in the Sahara. Wow! The list goes on.
In Police-land, there are some songs which traverse several or multiple key changes such as Regatta de Blanc and Synchronicity ii (which I’ve tried my best to explain but please note I am no musician so some of the more technical terms which would be useful to know I’m not qualified to list beyond intro, verse, bridge, chorus, outro and tempo – about the extent of my musicality other than hearing in colour of course). Once again here on WordPress, my palette is limited and the lists here don’t match my PDF’s. It would add to the already time consuming process to do them all over again, hence the headers being the only colour. None the less, I hope this offers an alternative way of looking on their incredible body of work.

WHITE/CREAM

BRING ON THE NIGHT (this, Fragile and All This Time are a shade warmer than ‘standard’ white so they could be classed as cream)
FRAGILE (some red in the intro and end)
ALL THIS TIME (latter part in yellow)

YELLOW

DEMOLITION MAN
SYNCHRONICITY II (this is probably one of their most technically difficult pieces to describe but I’ll have a go; intro and middle part in dark blue, verses in pale yellow, chorus and outro ‘many miles away’ part in green, bridge in teal green, coming out of the bridge – kind of a secondary bridge of you like, I’m sure there is a more proper term for this, is Andy’s guitar part which is an apricot similar to Next to You which then leads to the chorus. Some of these key attributes would later lend themselves to They Dance Alone albeit in a very different way)
THEY DANCE ALONE
IF I EVER LOSE MY FAITH IN YOU

ORANGE

NEXT TO YOU
IT’S ALRIGHT FOR YOU
DE DO DO DO, DE DA DA DA (intro, bridge and chorus in yellow, middle section blue)
REHUMANIZE YOURSELF
KING OF PAIN (intro in orange, first verse alternates between orange, red and blue, bridge and chorus in deep red middle part in green)

RED (different shades)

THE OTHER WAY OF STOPPING
EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC (middle part and end chant in purple)
DARKNESS
MURDER BY NUMBERS
ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK
FIELDS OF GOLD

LIGHT BLUE

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE (bridge in red)
VOICES INSIDE MY HEAD
WHEN WE DANCE (tail end in mid blue)

DARK BLUE/ORANGE

TEA IN THE SAHARA (intro, chorus and middle part in orange some of the sounds created by Andy’s guitar also give the impression of orange during the dark blue verses)

MINT GREEN

SHADOWS IN THE RAIN
TOO MUCH INFORMATION
SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD (chorus and outro in myrtle green)
SECRET JOURNEY (chorus in yellow)
O MY GOD (the latter part where it leads toward Mother is in dark blue)
WE WORK THE BLACK SEAM
BE STILL MY BEATING HEART

LIGHT GREEN

I MISS YOU KATE

DARK GREEN

FALL OUT

PALE PINK

DRIVEN TO TEARS (middle part before Andy’s guitar solo in dark blue Andy’s solo in white, chorus in deep pink)
SEVEN DAYS

GREY PINK

REGATTA DE BLANC (along with Synchronicity ii a very tricky piece to talk about. Intro and first part of the song in the pink grey as above, then a deep red for the chant part, next orange, then back to deep red for the closing part)

PINK

WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER (chorus in deep pink)

DEEP PINK (don’t have the right shade on my palette)

WHEN THE WORLD IS RUNNING DOWN… (chord structure alternates between deep pink and shades of crimson)
OMEGAMEN

CRIMSON

CAN’T STAND LOSING YOU
WALKING ON THE MOON
IF YOU LOVE SOMEBODY, SET THEM FREE
WE’LL BE TOGETHER

PURPLE

HUNGRY FOR YOU

GREY (varying shades)

DOES EVERYONE STARE
BEHIND MY CAMEL
SYNCHRONICITY I (middle part and latter part in green, for the outro the green collides with white)
EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE (middle ‘since you’ve gone..’ part in light blue)
RUSSIANS
DESERT ROSE

BROWN (varying shades)

ROXANNE (beige)
INVISIBLE SUN (taupe, chorus rose)
MOON OVER BOURBON STREET
LET YOUR SOUL BE YOUR PILOT
SOUL CAKE

BLACK

DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME (chorus in red – white coming out of chorus)

For the 2008 reunion tour some pieces were given a make over, notably Voices Inside My Head in a beautiful new red. When Andy’s guitar kicks in, it switches to white and then When the World.. in its traditional colours as above. Wrapped Around Your Finger was rebirthed in a golden yellow while Don’t Stand.. was an extravaganza with verses in crimson, a chorus in yellow, the middle in white, its latter chorus in light blue before ending on yellow.
