Song Lists: Tears For Fears

Can it really be 25 years since The Seeds of Love? And that agonising four year wait they put us fans through to get there following the masterstroke that was and is Songs From the Big Chair (30 years old next March by the way). Well I was a boy at school and now I am a lecturer at university but the music from one of the first bands I came to love on returning to the UK still resonates. I’ve also included some of Roland’s solo work. Also worth noting..  When I say colour I speak of base colour – a song – let’s say Memories Fade is mostly white but shifts key toward the end to a dirty dark blue/orange concoction I don’t have on my palette so I’ve listed it under white for easier reference. There are of course others that are difficult to pigeon hole such as The Prisoner and many of their b-sides; The Big Chair and Empire Building for starters. Likewise Change and Mad World both served up technical or rather technicolor conundrums during the writing stage. Anyway, here’s how it all appears to me in the wonderful world of colour sound.

WHITE/CREAM

MEMORIES FADE
WATCH ME BLEED (middle part in grey)
THE WORKING HOUR (intro and latter part in yellow)
MOTHERS TALK (initial intro synth-strings in light green, bridge and middle part in maroon the sonic melee rounding off the album version would best be described as grey)
YEAR OF THE KNIFE (there are some key shifts in the guitar riff early on and although they are technically a shift in colour they aren’t long enough to take much away from the main body of white, the only significant shift is in the middle where the bass and strings come into play – another sonic menagerie that lies mainly in the mid to darker ranges of pink)
POWER
SKETCHES OF PAIN
SECRET WORLD

MINT GREEN

STANDING AT THE CORNER OF THE THIRD WORLD

YELLOW

GOD’S MISTAKE
CALL ME MELLOW

ORANGE

IDEAS AS OPIATES
COLD
RAOUL AND THE KINGS OF SPAIN (verses are 2 lines light blue and 2 dark blue)

RED (different shades)

THE MARAUDERS
EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD
TEARS ROLL DOWN (B-SIDE VERSION)
READY TO START

PALE BLUE

PHARAOHS
WHEN IN LOVE WITH A BLIND MAN
TEARS ROLL DOWN (SINGLE VERSION)(very unusual shift in this one from blue to brown in the verse)
BULLETS FOR BRAINS

BRIGHT BLUE

BOY FROM SCHOOL

MID BLUE

THE HURTING (the bridge to this one is really unique as it traverses many colours from red, yellow, light green – a particular favourite of theirs during the time – see below, then back to blue. middle part is also in light green end part reprises the bridge chord progression)

DARK BLUE

DOG’S A BEST FRIEND’S DOG

DARK BLUE/ORANGE

MAD WORLD

LIGHT GREEN

PALE SHELTER
CHANGE (as always with green, pink is not far away and it can sometimes depend on pitch to determine which colour wins out so to speak, no easy task. Here the bridge has given me particular problems. Loosely speaking because the bridge has an alternating bass line it would appear that it’s both dark pink and alt green likewise the middle part is a close call between burgundy and dark green)
THE CONFLICT
THE WAY YOU ARE (middle synth part is maroon)
BREAK IT DOWN AGAIN

EMERALD GREEN

HEAD OVER HEELS (chorus in white)

TEAL GREEN

GOODNIGHT SONG

DARK GREEN

ALWAYS IN THE PAST (middle guitar solo in white)

PALE PINK

PINK

DEEP PINK (not really the right shade but sadly my palette is limited on wordpress)

ADVICE FOR THE YOUNG AT HEART (bridge purple there are also shades of burgundy/crimson in the song’s dna or chord structure)

BURGUNDY

SUFFER THE CHILDREN

CRIMSON

BADMAN’S SONG

VIOLET

SWORDS AND KNIVES (the parts with the oboe are in grey)

PURPLE

START OF THE BREAKDOWN
BROKEN (when it reaches the song part there is a shift toward emerald created mainly by the harpsichord and the Head Over Heels riff)
LISTEN (verses in orange)
WOMAN IN CHAINS (latter part in white)
SECRETS
LOW LIFE
HYPNOCULTURE
SNOWDROP (chorus in crimson)

GREY (varying shades)

ELEMENTAL
MR PESSIMIST
GAS GIANTS
LOS REYES CATOLICOS
MAYBE OUR DAYS ARE NUMBERED

BROWN

I BELIEVE
SEA SONG (middle ‘we smile’ part in an off kilter red, end part in mint green)
SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE (chorus in pink middle part dark pink/grey)

BLACK

SHOUT (technically the synth and bass in the verses give it a tinge of cola brown but the rest is black)
JOHNNY PANIC AND THE BIBLE OF DREAMS
